Preschool School Social Worker

A school social worker provides social-emotional, behavioral, family, and school-based support to children and families. 

In preschool, a social worker may:

  • Support children's social-emotional and behavioral development.
  • Work individually with children or provide support within classroom settings, as appropriate.
  • Help teachers understand and respond to children's behavioral or social-emotional needs.
  • Consult with parents and caregivers regarding concerns affecting a child's school participation or development.
  • Help families connect with community resources, counseling, mental health services, and other supports.
  • Participate as a member of the Child Study Team (CST) when appropriate.
  • Participate in evaluations and the development/implementation of services for children with disabilities.
  • Support children and families experiencing circumstances that may affect the child's ability to learn and participate successfully in school.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, CPIS, PIRS, school psychologists, related service providers, and other professionals.
