Gross Motor

Gross motor skills in preschool involve the development of large muscle movements like walking, running, jumping, and throwing. These skills are crucial for physical development and lay the foundation for other abilities. Engaging in activities that promote these skills helps preschoolers build strength, coordination, and confidence.
Examples of Gross Motor Activities:
- Running and Jumping:
Provide opportunities for children to run, jump over lines or cushions, and jump off of low steps. - Climbing and Crawling:
Set up obstacle courses with tunnels, low climbing structures, and crawling challenges. - Throwing and Catching:
Use balls of various sizes and encourage both underhand and overhand throwing, as well as catching a bounced ball. - Balancing:
Use balance beams, tape lines on the floor, or even just a low curb to practice balancing. - Riding Toys:
Tricycles, scooters, and other ride-on toys help develop leg strength and coordination. - Outdoor Play:
Encourage free play on playgrounds, walks, or hikes to allow for natural exploration and movement. - Dancing and Movement Games:
Games that encourage walking and dancing to music can be fun and engaging while developing coordination and rhythm.
